  1. Two hundred years ago, the Ark set off into space with its human cargo, leaving a doomed Earth behind Now, centuries later, the Ark is nearing its destination a new world where humanity can begin again Every bit of energy and attention is focused on the approaching day of the Flip, but when police chief Brian Benson stumbles upon a suspicious death, no matter how much political pressure he gets to treat the case as an accident, he simply can t let go I immediately found myself engaged by the wor [...]

  3. Fun, thrilling and intriguing space opera I had low expectations for The Ark but was intrigued by the high concept of a mystery science fiction hybrid tale a violent death occurs on a huge spaceship carrying the last living fifty thousand humans on a centuries long journey to Tau Ceti after the Earth is destroyed by an unfortunate encounter with a black hole. The main character is a male and manly cop named Bryan Benson who used to be a sports hero and the setting is culturally familiar to Americ [...]

  4. In short, it s a mystery set in space The last and best of humanity is on the Ark, along with the best of its history, and after over two centuries of travel is finally nearing its destination when Benson finds himself embroiled in something far worse than anything he s previously encountered, something inexplicable that has far reaching consequences It s space opera than science fiction there s plenty of tech, from the ship s complex systems to the implants plant each person has, and although [...]

  5. My original The Ark audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer. The Ark by Patrick S Tomlinson is the first novel in the series called Children of a Dead Earth Bryan Benson is a detective on a gigantic space ship called the Ark Many generations ago, a sampling of humankind was put onto the Ark to escape destruction Every person on the ship is equipped with an implant tracker that tracks not only their position, but also every aspect of their lives So when a crew member go [...]

  6. Full disclosure I ve known the author for some time, and have published his work though not this novel TL DR This book is a strong first sci fi novel with an interesting concept and setting I m looking forward to the next one.I think you can often tell a first novel there s some rough edges, a place or two where you can almost hear the author working out what s going on And this first novel has some of those problems.Luckily, it has few of those problems, and they re always ones that get resolve [...]

  7. I won a paperback copy of this book in a giveaway. The story is an excellent blend of science fiction and mystery. The mystery is much complex than one think in the beginning Due to a lot of twists and turns the reader keeps guessing nearly until the end of the book The pacing is well done.Beginning with page one the reader is part of the story The world is reduced to the generation ship ARK which is inhabited by 50000 people That should give you an impression of the ship dimension. One may not al [...]

  8. A skillful mystery thriller in an intricately designed and populated colony ship filled with all that remains of humanity A missings persons case would seem like a low priority for a constable weeks before the generation ship is scheduled to arrive at humanity s new home, but Constable Benson smells something fishy, and his missing persons case leads to a much larger conspiracy which could threaten the entire ship and humanity s last hope for a future.

  9. copy from Netgalley in exchange for a review It s been a good year for novels set on generation ships, and Patrick S Tomlinson s The Ark continues that trend It s a fast paced sci fi thriller, with a central mystery at the core, with some decent characters and well executed prose. One of the central pivots of this book is the world it s created A generation ship, carrying the third generation descendants of mankind s best and brightest A ship separated with a gulf between crew and passenger A shi [...]

  10. The generation ship known to its inhabitants as The Ark holds the last fifty thousand humans in the universe Er, make that 49,999 and falling When brilliant geneticist Edmond Laraby goes missing only a few weeks before the Ark is finally going to reach humanity s new home in Tau Ceti which should be impossible due to the tracking device implanted in everyone s skull when they re born , it s up to Detective Bryan Benson to discover what happened.Benson must find out what happened to Laraby, and p [...]

  11. Man, you know what I love Books where technology and society have shifted, and it s not instantly evil Stories where there s new and exciting things happening, and those things are just part of daily life for the characters And then a story happens, and involves those things, but isn t BECAUSE of those things.Oh hey, The Ark I wonder if I ll like this book for exactly the reasons I just said Yes.So, mandatory birth control and a total surveillance state, mixed with the technology to live on a ge [...]

  12. Ah space the final frontier, when the earth takes it last gasp we are all destined for the stars. The Ark carries the last of humankind, having set off 200 years ago, generation after generation has grown up never setting for on solid ground The cream of mankind has made the massive spaceship its home, the population is split across two distinct zones and policing one of those zones is Bryan Benson, ex sports hero and current detective of the Avalon zone.A case comes across his path, one that has [...]

  13. Disclosure Patrick helped me escape from prison in Thailand after we were both arrested for running a Jack Russell terrier fighting ring on Phuket This may bias my opinions of him and his bookE ARK contains no Jack Russell terriers nor Thai prisons It does, however, contain a locked room murder mystery in a gigantic generation ship that s about to reach its destination And it gets better from there Patrick captures the crushing claustrophobia of living in a self contained world and the mind shat [...]

  15. Excellent book I found myself staying up well into the middle of the night, unable to go to sleep without knowing what would happen next I prefer to not include spoilers, so let me just say this omg that ending didn t see that coming any of it, including the little tidbit That will make sense once you read it I cannot wait for the sequel

  16. Very nice theme, good universe, I am a fan of this kind of stories. But Although it was enjoyable to read, I am a bit disappointed by this book the main plot is weak and highly predictable sewn with white thread as i would write in french And I didn t like very much the characters, especially the main one.

  17. An enjoyable murder mystery set on a generational ship, with a truly cheesy cover But inside lies await an interesting read with a broad potential scope for the sequels.

  18. This is the first time I ve ever been grateful that when reading on a Kindle you can t peek ahead at the ending This book had so many twists and turns in it, that I should not have been surprised at how surprised I was at the way it resolved Basically, it s a murder mystery set against a science fiction backdrop But there really is nothing basic about this story Yes, it s a story about a generation ship trying to preserve the human race But I tended to forget that part while getting into the liv [...]

  19. This review originally published in Looking For a Good Book Rated 4.0 of 5The last remnants of Earth and humanity are in a giant moon sized ship hurdling toward Tau Ceti G where they will re settle humanity The trip has already lasted hundreds of years and those aboard are second generation at best of those who first set out for the new world Everyone aboard the ship has an implant so that they can be monitored they are born that way and everyone has a specific job to do Bryan Benson is a retire [...]

  20. This novel is brilliant I hardly ever use exclamation points in reviews but I really believe this book has earned it Rarely can I pick up a sci fi novel and be completely absorbed in its story, but there s something very special about The Ark The mystery, the military conspiracy and the human interactions are just a few things that make this story so gripping I also think it s the subtle way the author was able to illustrate the fragility and the resilience of the human raceThe book feels very s [...]

  21. When the people of Earth discovered a rogue black hole that would destroy the planet, they spent their last years trying to save some shred of humanity, building the Ark, a massive generation starship bound for a new world That was two hundred years ago, and they re now nearing the other side of the journey But when somebody goes missing, Detective Brian Benson must investigate He soon finds it s murder, and it could mean very bad things for the human race.Full disclosure I received this book fo [...]

  22. This is the story I wish I had written Generation ship Detective story Tomlinson takes such discordant elements and weaves them into a fascinating story a Manet painting, advanced probes, exoplanet imaging, and There are echoes of Robert Sawyer s Red Planet Blues here and I m hoping that this is the start of a new subgenre detectives in space Tomlinson takes us through a generational ship from the ground level view of Bryan This is first and foremost a crime drama but don t make the assumption [...]

  23. This was reminiscent of the old black and white detective stories that I watched as a kid, but kicked up a notch and throw out hundreds of millions of miles into space Meet Bryan Benson a former sports all star at a game called Zero who has been appointed to a detective police position after retiring from the sport Its a cushy job until one day someone turns up missing Benson is forced into a string of different lies and stories in an attempt to find this missing man.First things first, I loved [...]

  24. The Ark eBook was published in 2015 November and was written by Patrick S Tomlinson patrickstomlinson This is Mr Tomlinson s second novel and the first in his Children of a Dead Earth series I obtained a galley of this novel for review through netgalley I would categorize this novel as PG as there are instances of Violence, Mature Language and Mature Situations This Science Fiction Mystery novel is set in a future where Earth has launched a ship to Tau Ceti with the last survivors of the human r [...]

  25. Patrick S Tomlinson has a great start to a science fiction series in The Ark The Earth was dying because of a black hole so 50,000 inhabitants were chosen to leave on the Ark Tomlinson s descriptive writing has the reader actually seeing the Ark its components, habitats, the game Zero and much The Ark has taken 100 s of years to reach a planet which can be colonized The hopes are that on the planet some of the restrictions like head implants, baby license, etc will be lifted Scientist on the Ar [...]

  26. Murder on a generation ship carrying the last 50,000 humans in the universe on their way to Tau Ceti G to re establish humanity after an unexpected mini black hole destroyed Earth.Bryan Benson is the chief constable of Avalon, one of two separate pods on the Ark He s the one on whose watch a ship s crewman scientist is murdered Filled with detail on how an Ark would function even what might be a plausible team sport in microgravity The Ark throws lots of weirdness at the chief since there s neve [...]

  27. The Ark is an impressive debut to Patrick S Tomlinson s new science fiction series The Ark blends tense mystery and thrilling science fiction action, resulting in a novel certain to captivate science fiction fans. The last of humanity resides on The Ark, a ship in precarious balance Crime is almost unheard of, weeded out through genetic selection Bryan Benson, former sports hero, enjoys a cushy job as Avalon module s chief of police When a crew member goes missing, Benson is instructed to quickly [...]

  28. The Ark starts with a missing person, becomes a murder mystery and ends up revealing a very big secret that almost destroyed the Ark All of the action revolves around Bryan Benson Benson is the past captain of Zero Ball and he was promoted to Chief Constable when he retired It was not a hard job as there was very little crime on the Ark That changed as they got very near the end of their 10 generation journey.I liked the world building in The Ark The Earth was about to be destroyed and 50,000 we [...]
